Established in 2001, the .NAME generic domain name extension is the only one planned for personal websites only. These domains can consist of personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other designations people are famous by. Initially, solely 3rd-level registrations were allowed, so if you planned to order john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and second-level registrations were also permitted. Already registered 3rd-level names remained working.
